Dr Segenet Kelemu, Director General and CEO of icipe appointed member of the National Science and Technology Council of Rwanda

Dr Segenet Kelemu, icipe Director General, has been appointed a member of the National Science and Technology Council of Rwanda, the governing body of the country’s National Commission of Science and Technology (NCST).

Established in June 2015, NCST’s core mandate is to provide strategic advice to the Government of Rwanda on all matters pertaining to the development of science, technology, innovation and research as drivers for rapid national socio-economic transformation and growth, in line with the Rwanda Vision 2020. NCST also has the authority to raise funds and manage the National Research and Innovation Fund of Rwanda.

The National Science and Technology Council provides high-level decision making and tactical guidance to NCST, to ensure that its activities are conducted in line with a clearly defined national science, technology, research and innovation agenda. It is also through the Council that NCST reports to the Office of the President of the Republic of Rwanda.

NCST management, under the guidance of the Office of the President of the Republic, has identified key and relevant persons to serve as Members of the National Science and Technology Council. The 11 Members of the National Science and Technology Council were appointed by Rwanda’s Cabinet Meeting of 09 December 2016, chaired by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Kagame.

The Council is composed of a cross-disciplinary team that includes top government officials, prominent scientists and leaders from the public, private and academic sectors. Members of the Council, referred to as Councillors, are chosen based on their respective merit and bold experience, while being mindful of the global and cross-cutting nature of science, technology and innovation issues.
