Prof. Mutero is the coordinator of the Integrated Vector Management (IVM) project, within icipe's Malaria Programme. He is also an extraordinary professor in the School of Health Systems and Public Health, University of Pretoria, South Africa. 

His professional interests include the development and promotion of cross-sectoral strategies for sustainable control of vector-borne diseases in developing countries, mainly focusing on malaria.

From 2001 to 2006 ,he was the founding coordinator of the CGIAR System-wide Initiative on Malaria and Agriculture (SIMA) and a senior researcher at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). He serves as a temporary adviser to the World Health Organization on IVM issues.
