Establishment of pilot commercial processing plant for food bait production for the management of fruit flies in Kenya

Protein baits have been used in various forms for fruit fly controls for many years. Apart from the Republic of South Africa, there are no facilities available for protein food bait production in sub Saharan Africa (SSA) and commercial products are often imported at exorbitant prices. In Australia and several Pacific Islands, protein food baits are produced locally where they used widely for the control of a variety of fruit fly species. Effective products such as ‘Royal Tongalure’ and Promar are available at much lower prices than other imported commercial lures. In this project icipe plans to test various yeast products from different African countries in combination with additives and import and adapt ‘in-house’ production technologies for fruit fly control from Australia and the Pacific for use in Africa.
