Global Forum on Biological Control

Date:  26 – 30 June 2023
Time: 08:00 – 12:00 hrs (UTC +3) 26 June 2023
           08:00 – 17:00 hrs (UTC+3) 27 June 2023
           28 – 30 June 2023 – In-person hands-on training on biological control

Co-organized by: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe).

Objective: The main objectives of the forum are to share research results on biocontrol as a primary tool in fall armyworm (FAW) management; discuss progress, challenges and ways forward in scaling-up biocontrol in each target region; develop a roadmap for scaling-up biological control in Asia, NENA and Africa.

Forum structure and outputs: The forum will consist of keynote speeches, a field visit, thematic sessions, breakout sessions and a summary session with recommendations from each breakout session. The thematic sessions will focus on arthropod biocontrol agents, microbials and botanicals, and semiochemicals. The breakout sessions will center on three topics: 1) organizing and incentivizing national R&D on biocontrol; 2) commercialization and regulation of biocontrol options;
3) extension and policy to create enabling environments for biocontrol scale-up. Across all breakout sessions, dialogue will identify bottlenecks as well as potential solutions for each topic, with an ultimate aim to develop a roadmap for scaling-up biological control in developing countries.
