4 May 2016 – Two recently published papers resulting from collaborative research between the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), Nairobi, Kenya, and colleagues from France and the United States of America (USA), show that exploring for new insect species need not involve complex and expensive field expeditions.

Rolex has earlier announced the names of the renowned scientists, environmentalists, innovators and explorers who will comprise the international jury that will select the 10 winners of the commemorative edition of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise.

An image from a paper published by Joel Bargul, a recent icipe PhD graduate, and Jamin Jung, University of Wuerzburg, and colleagues in the Journal PLoS Pathogens in February 2016 has been selected as the image of the Day for 23^rd April 2016 by BPoD (Biomedical Picture of the Day), which is managed by the UK MRC Clinical Sciences Centre.

A recent study by icipe that has identified the genes responsible for chemical sensing in tsetse flies could help to improve the way that the insects are managed, because they carry the trypanosome parasite that causes human sleeping sickness and the livestock disease nagana.
