Dr Liz Ng'ang'a
Educated in Kenya and the United Kingdom, Liz holds a PhD in international development focusing on science, technology and development, an MSc in African Studies and a BA in Literature and English language. She has close to 20 years work experience as a communications, and recently research professional, gained through assignments in the research and development (R&D) sector, African social and economic development institutions, corporate public relations and mainstream journalism. The institutions she has worked for include: Joint Support Secretariat Office (JSSO) of the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank and the UN Economic Commission for Africa; the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO); TWAS, The World Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (www.twas.org); and for Science and Development Network (www.scidev.net).
Liz’s rearch interests and skills include: indepth understanding of historical and contemporary trajectories of science, technology and innovation in the South; Africa regional economic and integration issues; investigating stratification and collaboration within communities of practice and communities of knowledge; mapping and analyzing stakeholders and their diverse narratives in R&D activities; advancing knowledge on theories, conceptualisations, discourses, contexts and discursive mechanisms of Power in R&D; understanding models for collaboration between communities, researchers, donors and policymakers, to enhance R&D activities and compiling histories/stories of outstanding institutions and individuals in science and technolgy in developing countries.
Her editorial skills include: ability to synthesise and translate complex issues, for instance scientific research findings, into layman language; production of news items, human interest features and press briefing materials; editorial project management, including leading concept and design development, information generation and packaging; website design and development and writing, editing, re-writing and over-writing skills.
In communications and public relations, Liz is capable of: designing and implementing communications strategies; conference and meeting reporting and rapporteuring; brand and corporate publicity; media management and liaison; social media management and event management.
