Edible insects for circular economy and inclusive development
WEBINAR
This webinar is a side event of the FAO Science and Innovation Forum 2022
Event date: 14 October 2022
Time: 11:00 – 13:00hrs (Eastern Africa Time)
Organized by: International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), Nairobi, Kenya
Increasing awareness and demand for sustainable animal proteins and micronutrients has renewed interest on edible insects, a traditional protein source for over 2 billion people. Insects have minimal ecological footprints compared to conventional livestock. Rapidly emerging agri-businesses based on black soldier flies contribute to: (i) recycle organic wastes into high value insect proteins for animal feeds; and (ii) generate insect frass fertilizers for improving crop productivity and soil health. Edible insect sector strengthens circular economy and inclusive development. Innovative research, public-private partnerships and enabling policies that are critical for scaling edible insect technologies will be presented and discussed. |
