CGIAR Research Programme (CRP) on Humidtropics - Integrated Systems for the Humid Tropics
icipe is developing effective management methods for fruit flies attacking fruits and vegetables. This involves developing and testing protocols and tools for prioritizing best-bet approaches to address the system productivity gaps in fruits and vegetable production particularly the pest problems. The project uses a participatory mapping approach to identify target areas or “intervention hotspots” where high incidence of poverty and food insecurity coincides with high importance of selected fruit crop production by small-scale producers. Based on the identification of system-component productivity gaps through different modeling tools, interventions are identified and tested. These are tested under on-farm conditions, accompanied by farm-level evaluation and scaling up. The project is implemented in Western Kenya and Eastern Uganda.
