Improving Honey Productivity and Quality (IHPQ) Project in Shabwah and Al-Hudaydah Governorates in Yemen

Faced with a water crisis, the government of Yemen has identified beekeeping as one of the five strategic activities in the country. This project therefore endevours to promote the honey sub-sector as the engine for growth in the agro-forestry sector. icipe is tackling the increasing challenges of the honey sub-sector in Shabwah and Al-Hudaydah governorates in Yemen. The aim is to improve the productivity and quality of honey and other hive based products leading to long-term sustainable growth in the incomes of small-scale beekeepers in the targeted governorates, in addition to adoption of better and innovative modern beekeeping technology, tools and best practices by beekeepers. This will be achieved through building capacity of beekeepers and awareness creation in modern beekeeping technology for queen rearing for increasing honey production, processing and marketing, and in the diagnosis and control of bee diseases and pests; establish through training and infrastructure support the eco-trade of honey and hive based products all the way through marketplace development, standardization, branding and organic certification of honey; Increase bee floral resources through participatory tree plantation to improve bee biodiversity and enrich ecosystem; Promote pollination services and strengthen crop production and animal feed in small holder-farms.
