Bee health and productivity in Yemen (EIF/WTO)

In recent years, beekeeping in Yemen has been affected major diseases and pests. It is estimated that up to 40% of hives may be contaminated by diseases, pests and predators, reducing the yield, quality of honey as well as the number of colonies. This project therefore aims to protect honey bees and the honey industry in Yemen by minimising the incidence of bee diseases and pests. The goal is to increase honey production for income generation, improve crop yields through pollination services and harmonise procedures and legislation relating to bee health issues in Yemen. The project will facilitate more efficient knowledge management systems, provide skills and resources necessary to raise awareness and profiles of the stakeholders, provide policy makers and regulators with advice, and develop framework on beehealth in Yemen. These activities, which focus on identifying and piloting policies and best practice options, will have far-reaching effects on achieving the envisaged goal of the project. Adoption of better bee disease and pest control methods, better diagnosis and risk assessment methods, better prevention and therapy, capacity building in this area and legislative, policy and laws will be enacted.
