icipe research selected Biomedical Picture of the Day (BPoD)

An image from a paper published by Joel Bargul, a recent icipe PhD graduate, and Jamin Jung, University of Wuerzburg, and colleagues in the Journal PLoS Pathogens in February 2016 has been selected as the image of the Day for 23rd April 2016 by BPoD (Biomedical Picture of the Day), which is managed UK MRC Clinical Sciences Centre. Titled “Seeing Swimmingly”, the image is available on the BPoD website for 24 hours, then stored in perpetuity in their archive.

This paper titled Species-Specific Adaptations of Trypanosome Morphology and Motility to the Mammalian Host was also selected as the cover image for the February issue of PLoS Pathogens. This study describes adaptation of trypanosomes to their mammalian host as part of a panel of survival tactics that include the well known mechanism of variation of their surface coat, and removal of antibodies from the surface as demonstrated in this study.  This project is funded by the German Research Foundation (http://www.dfg.de/en/) and is a collaboration between Dr Dan Masiga of icipe, and Prof. Markus Engstler of University of Wuerzburg.
