Dr. Baldwyn Torto Appointed to the editorial Board of the Journal of Chemical Ecology
Dr. Baldwyn Torto, icipe’s Head of Behavioural and Chemical Ecology department (BCED), has been appointed a member of the editorial Board of the Journal of Chemical Ecology. The journal is devoted to promoting an ecological understanding of the origin, function, and significance of natural chemicals that mediate interactions within and between organisms. It publishes original research and reviews concerning both the biological and chemical aspects of chemical ecology, and includes observations of interactions in nature, and the elucidation and mechanisms of chemical compounds involved.
Dr. Torto is among six new members, who will serve 5-year terms as part of the journal’s continuing efforts “to keep the Board fresh, rejuvenated, balanced by sub-discipline, geography, and gender”. A Chemical Ecology expert, Dr. Torto holds undergraduate and Masters degrees from the University of Ghana, and a PhD under icipe’s African Regional Postgraduate Programme (ARPPIS). He acquired his research skills under the mentorship of renowned researchers in Kenya, the USA, and the UK, including Ahmed Hassanali, Michael Bentley, Barbara Cole, John Pickett, Jim Tumlinson, and Peter Teal. His research interests for the past 20 years have involved the chemical ecology of a wide range of insects that include locusts, stem borers, mosquitoes, bee pests, and various beneficial insects.
