Research project title:  Isolation and molecular characterisation of Microsporidia species in Anopheles mosquitoes in Kenya.

Lilian is a DRIP MSc fellow supervised by Dr Jeremy Herren (icipe) and Dr Victor Mobegi (University of Nairobi, Kenya). Lilian’s research interests include Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics and Host-pathogen relationship research and is currently doing isolation and molecular characterisation of Microsporidia in Anopheles mosquitoes collected in Kenya. Efforts to control malaria that focus on vector management and antimalarials have faced setbacks, often linked to the evolution of resistance to control strategies. Insects harbor a diversity of symbiotic microbes such as Microsporidia and Spiroplasma that have evolved protection against pathogens.  This study focuses on Microsporidia and aims to determine its correlation with the Plasmodium parasite infection in native populations of Anopheles mosquitoes in Mwea and Mbita. Lilian completed her undergraduate studies in BSc. Biomedical Technology at the University of Nairobi.
