H.E. Prof. Hirut Woldemariam

H.E. Prof. Hirut Woldemariam is a minister of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MoSHE) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE). Before that, she was working as a minister of Culture & Tourism; and as a minister of Labour & Social Affairs respectively.

She is a professor of linguistics at Addis Ababa University. She did her PhD at the University of Cologne, Institute of African Studies in 2004.  She has published one book and a number of articles in different international journals.  At Addis Ababa University, she was the first female Vice- President who had served the university at the top management level for about 7 years.

She is a fellow of the Ethiopian Science Academy, Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Ethiopian Philological Society, leader of a joint NOREHED project; member of the Network on Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan in University of Oslo, member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Multilingualism and Diversities Research at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa (CMDR). 

She has a great contribution in community and public services as a member of Public Diplomacy of Ethiopia, National Council for the Great Renaissance Dam of Ethiopia, Academy of Ethiopian Languages.

She has received different awards including Doctor Philosophiae causa for 2020 from University of Oslo; Research Award for Senior Scientists from Alexander Humboldt; Solidarity Award from the Association International de Linguistique Appliqueé (AILA), USA; and OSSREA, the 17th Social Science Research competition for young scholars. Moreover, she has been member in various national and international research networks and projects.
