Ms Meron Belay Alene

Ms Belay is the Gender Specialist for the Young Entrepreneurs in Honey and Silk project. She has eight years of experience in gender and capacity building.

Prior to joining icipe, she was the Participation and Inclusion manager at Pact Inc. Her major responsibilities included designing inclusion strategies for various development projects including WASH, Nutrition and Education projects, designing training manuals and providing capacity building support services.

As YESH's gender specialist, Ms Belay is responsible for collecting and compiling data and information on the economic and social value of women’s participation in bee-keeping and silk worm farming, raising awareness among partners and staff and assessing the situation of women before, during and after the project implementation period.  

Previously, she served as Gender and Capacity Building Advisor at Save the Children International in Ethiopia on the Development Food Assistance Programme, part of a government owned Productive Safety Nets Programme operating in Eastern and South Eastern pastoral areas of Ethiopia. She conducted a number of qualitative and quantitate studies on women and youth and designed gender integration strategies for several projects aimed at ensuring the inclusion of women, youth and other vulnerable groups in the programs.

She holds MSc degree in Development Studies from University College Dublin and MA degree in Human Rights from University of Nottingham.
